The Transit of Venus

One of the loveliest books this bookworm of a Bookshop Doe has read lately.

A tender morsel:

When she got up she held aside the curtain, and looked at the street and the harbour. She thought how she has been a child beside the sea, and then a woman in high rooms like rooms in dreams, and tangled gardens. She thought of continents and cities, men and women, words. The beloved. Josie's child. As if she listed every graceful moment of her life, to offer in extenuation.
--Shirley Hazzard

OLYMPIA LE-TAN is the Parisian It Girl who amalgamates classic literature with high fashion with her handmade handbags inspired by first-edition covers of her favourite literary classics, including The Catcher in the Rye, The Leopard, Dracula, and Beauty and the Beast. Each bag is hand-embroidered by Olympia, with vintage Liberty floral inlays and put together by a traditional French bookmaker who then constructs the bag by hand.

Her collection is available only in selected shops like Colette (Paris) and Bookmarc by Marc Jacobs. This is the first time Olympia Le-Tan's works will be presented in Singapore.

Not only is Anthony Bourdain a chef, he is also a host on his own tv show, a writer and a great communicator. He has written eight books so far, including three non-fiction ones. His writing is straightforward, really fun and easy to read and he has a good sense of humour. Reading his books is like going on adventures, except in your head, in your imaginations. His most recent work is Medium Raw, available at BooksActually.
In this video, he talks about the book. If you're a fan and you haven't gotten a copy, go on down to BooksActually and grab one!

Bowl-ed Over

On this lazy Sunday where every hour past means an hour closer to moody monday, I went to work and saw this curious little brown bomb placed on top of the cashier...

Who needs an iron rice bowl from the government when working for K + K gives you
The Wonder Bowl!

The amazing thing about this bowl is that, it is not just any bowl.
Of course, it MUST be special if it was a bribe gift from your bosses to make you work even harder and sell more Polaroid Cards and Lollipops on lazy Sundays.
The Wonder Bowl can be used in 1001 ways and allow me to show you its greatness.

The fundamental use of a bowl is of course to pile it high with food.
I may not have succulent prawns right now in Birds & Co.
but I reckon our plastic prawns are a good replacement.
-smacks lips-
Vintage Prawn Sharpener (four dollars), available at Birds & Co.

Halloween is coming
and instead of being like everyone else who carries a Halloween-themed bucket for trick-or-treating,
stand out from the crowd..
Bring the bowl out and demand for sweets!
Lollipop (one dollar fifty cents each), available at Birds & Co.

And just in case if I lose my marbles,
K + K reminded me that I can store all my marbles in this little bowl.
How lovely.
Assorted Marbles (three for one dollar), available at Birds & Co.

I love eating groundnuts but because I am no Martha Steward,
I leave all my groundnut shells all over the ground and pretend that I can't see them due to my small eyes.
Ta-da!
The Wonder Bowl kills all excuses and is the perfect bowl to store my groundnut shells.
Peanut sharpener (three dollars), available at Birds & Co.

Last but not least,
I know what The Wonder Bowl can be used for...
I can use it to ask for my pay from K + K!

the moon is not made of cheese, it is made of lotus paste.

The Autmnal Equinox may have silently moved over our heads
in a glowing ball of light,
but you can still have your (moon)cake and eat it.

She bangs The Drums

if you fall asleep down by the water
baby i'll carry you, all the way home

if you fall asleep down by the water
baby i'll carry you, all the way home

everybody's gotta love some one
but i just wanna love you dear
everybody's gotta feel something
but i just want to be with you, my dear

i know it's hard
i know it's hard
i know it's hard to be in this forever
if they stop loving you
i won't stop loving you
if they stop needing you
i'll still need you, my dear

if you fall asleep down by the water
baby i'll carry you, all the way home

if you fall asleep down by the water
baby i'll carry you, all the way home

you've gotta believe me
when i say
when i say the word, forever

and whatever
comes your way
oh we'll still be together

i know it's hard
i know it's hard
but i understand you, just take my hand

if you fall asleep down by the water
baby i'll carry you, all the way home

if you fall asleep down by the water
baby i'll carry you, all the way home

Nevermind the silly music video. This is a sweet song off The Drums' self-titled debut album, available at BooksActually. Go get yourself a copy, if you like what you hear!
